UL 891 covers the design, construction, and testing requirements for low voltage deadfront switchboards. A switchboard is a piece of electrical equipment intended for power distribution of an incoming power source to an outgoing load. It is typically used in industrial settings but can also be found in residential and commercial applications. Switchboards can be designed to fit a large envelope of electrical needs.
A low voltage (600V AC and under) switchboard typically consists of an incoming power section and one or more distribution sections. The incoming power section is where the main disconnecting means exist to supply power to the switchboard’s distribution section(s) by means of overcurrent protection devices like circuit breakers and fused switches. There are many variations of this configuration that comprise Kratos’ capabilities, such as: multiple incoming sources, generator connection, control compartments, etc.
The construction of these units must meet numerous safety and quality standards before they are certified. The switchboard must be sized for the appropriate environmental setting, voltage, ampacity, and short circuit requirements. They must also accommodate physical system requirements such as conduit entry space, terminal sizes, accessibility, and overall equipment footprint. The Standard also requires meticulous labeling compliance to help operators avoid integration or safety incidents.
UL 891 certification is a base requirement of most municipalities, inspectors, and AHJs (Authority Having Jurisdiction) when installing switchboards. Because the standards set forth by UL 891 are so comprehensive – covering materials of construction, dimensional constraints, service entry requirements, and more – a UL 891 label simplifies the site certification process significantly.

UL 891 Certified switchboards provide credibility to the manufacturer and the installer of the product and exhibit a commitment to the high levels of quality and safety required for successful project execution. As a result, UL 891 certified switchboards are overwhelmingly specified by Customers, Engineers, and field installers versus non-certified switchboards. By requiring the switchboard manufacturer to focus on the quality and design of the equipment, it narrows the scope of work to be performed by the end user or integrator in the field.
By demonstrating high quality design and construction to UL (or any valid Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory – NRTL) through rigorous testing, engineering, and technical writing processes, Kratos earns the confidence of our customers and end users. Once a product has passed the required testing and inspection procedures, UL will issue a certificate and label that the manufacturer can use on their products. UL 891 certification requires a current Manufacturer’s Technical Representative, a subject matter expert who has passed a technical exam covering the Standard from UL. This, along with quarterly product inspections, assures manufacturers maintain the high level of quality set forth by the Standard.
